FA Cup 3rd Qualifying Round

South Shields Ladies v Norton & Stockton Ancients Ladies

FA Cup day is always exciting for every club and Norton were looking forward to the task ahead. Both teams were unbeaten this season in both league and cup matches so something had to give.

Norton began the game without Chelsea Bell and Sian Williams, as well as Sam McGovern who failed a late fitness test. Jess White returned to the side after missing the last two games.

Norton went straight at the home side and could have scored early when a Corrie through ball found Thorns; Thorns rounded the keeper but her touch was too heavy and the ball went out for a goal kick.

Thorns then had another chance when she latched on to a through ball from Burton, but this time her shot was well saved by the Shields 'keeper. Norton continued to create chances but could not seem to find the net. Shields were working extremely hard to keep Norton at bay and began to get themselves back into the game, however Norton's back four of Stabler, Johnson, McGuire and Wilkinson were proving tough to get past. Shields then had a chance to take the lead when Chisnall made a great save to keep it level at the break.

Norton started the second half strong and a change in formation saw McSorley switch roles moving from out wide to the middle of the park.

Within minutes of the change, McSorley gained possession in the middle and sent Nyci Thorns clear; like the first half she rounded the 'keeper but this time her touch took her wide and the chance went begging. Norton were well on top now and the midfield three of Burton, Corrie and McSorley were dominating the play and creating chances for the front three of White, Mawston and Thorns.

The deadlock was finally broken just before the hour mark when Anna Mawston played a short pass to the feet of Kate McSorley who beat two players before smashing the ball into the bottom corner. Norton began to relax in possession and knocked the ball around well but Shields still worked hard as at 1-0 they were still in the game. Norton could have and should have extended the lead when Anna Mawston broke into the penalty area and was fouled by a Shields defender. Mawston picked herself up to take the spot kick but she fired the ball high over the crossbar.

Norton did eventually get a well deserved second goal when Anna Mawston broke clear and fired a low shot from 25 yards that was well saved by the Shields keeper but the ball came loose and Nyci Thorns slid the ball home to make it 2-0.

Shields nearly pulled a goal back when a short back pass from Wilkinson put the Shields forward through but Chisnall helped her teammate out by winning the fifty-fifty challenge.

Norton put the tie to bed on the 82nd minute when Thorns was fouled on the edge of the penalty area and from the resulting free-kick, Courtney Corrie found the bottom corner.

Norton had further chances with Mawston and Whittle bringing saves out of the Shields keeper and Burton putting a free kick just wide from 25 yards but the score remained 3-0 and Norton find themselves in the hat for the 1st round proper tomorrow afternoon.

Overall Norton deserved the victory and were pleased with their second clean sheet in as many games.

We would like to wish South Shields all the best for the season in their quest for promotion.
